One accidental can be the difference between a correct minor scale and a lost mark. The difficulty is rarely the notes A, B, C, D and E; it is remembering what happens to the sixth and seventh degrees, and whether the scale is travelling up or down.

The clearest way to compare harmonic vs melodic minor scales is to begin with the natural minor. Harmonic minor changes one scale degree. Melodic minor changes two on the way up, then returns to natural minor on the way down. Once that pattern is secure, the different forms stop looking like separate lists.

Start with natural minor

The natural minor is the reference pattern. In A minor, it is:

A–B–C–D–E–F–G–A

A natural minor shares its key signature with C major: no sharps or flats. Other minor keys have their own signatures. Before altering any notes, write the correct minor key signature and the natural-minor letter sequence.

If key signatures are still slow, review how to read key signatures or use the circle of fifths guide to connect each minor key with its relative major.

How does the harmonic minor scale work?

To create a harmonic minor scale, raise the seventh degree of the natural minor by one semitone. Keep it raised both ascending and descending.

In A minor, G becomes G-sharp:

A–B–C–D–E–F–G♯–A–G♯–F–E–D–C–B–A

The raised seventh is called the leading note because it sits a semitone below the tonic and pulls strongly towards it. It also changes the chord built on the fifth degree. In A natural minor, E–G–B forms E minor. With G-sharp, E–G♯–B forms E major, creating a stronger dominant-to-tonic movement back to A minor.

Harmonic minor also creates an augmented second between the sixth and raised seventh degrees: F to G-sharp in A minor. That distinctive gap helps explain why the scale has a recognisable sound.

In harmonic minor, the seventh degree stays raised in both directions.

How does the melodic minor scale work?

In the traditional classical form used in written theory, raise both the sixth and seventh degrees while ascending. While descending, lower them back to the notes of the natural minor.

In A melodic minor:

Ascending: A–B–C–D–E–F♯–G♯–A

Descending: A–G–F–E–D–C–B–A

Raising F to F-sharp smooths the augmented second found between F and G-sharp in harmonic minor. The ascending line now moves E–F♯–G♯–A in whole steps followed by a semitone into the tonic. On the way down, the natural sixth and seventh restore the familiar natural-minor shape.

You may encounter a different convention in jazz, where “melodic minor” often means the ascending form used in both directions. For AMEB-focused classical theory work, follow the form specified in the current AMEB syllabus and the wording of the question.

Classical melodic minor changes direction: raised sixth and seventh up, natural minor down.

A step-by-step method for writing either scale

Use the same process in every key:

Write the tonic and each letter name in order. A scale must use each letter once before the tonic repeats.

Add the minor key signature. Do not start by guessing accidentals note by note.

Choose the form. Harmonic minor raises 7 in both directions. Melodic minor raises 6 and 7 ascending, then uses natural minor descending.

Raise by a semitone without changing the letter. In A minor, the seventh must be G-sharp, not A-flat.

Show cancellations when needed. If the ascending and descending scale is written within one bar, naturals may be required on the descent to cancel earlier accidentals.

Check the final intervals. Harmonic minor should have a semitone from 7 to 8. Ascending melodic minor should not contain the augmented second between 6 and 7.

Say the scale degrees aloud while writing: “six, seven, tonic”. That focuses attention on the notes that change instead of making the student re-memorise the whole scale.

Harmonic vs melodic minor scales in AMEB-aligned study

AMEB Theory of Music introduces harmonic minor scales before melodic minor. By Grade 5, students work with all major and minor scales, including both harmonic and melodic minor forms. Always check the current AMEB syllabus for the examination year.

MusoLearn develops minor scales progressively. Earlier levels establish key signatures and harmonic-minor patterns; Level 5 works with harmonic and melodic forms across the required keys. This sequence matters: melodic minor is much easier when relative keys and harmonic minor are already reliable.

Common minor-scale mistakes

Changing the wrong notes. Harmonic minor changes only 7; melodic minor changes 6 and 7 while ascending.

Forgetting the direction. Harmonic minor keeps its raised seventh descending. Classical melodic minor returns to natural minor descending.

Using the major key signature. Find the relative major if helpful, but write the signature belonging to the minor key.

Respelling a note. Raising G gives G-sharp, not A-flat. The letter sequence must remain intact.

Forgetting double sharps. In some sharp minor keys, raising the seventh requires a double sharp. It may look unusual, but it preserves the correct scale degree.

Practising only from memory. A student may play a scale correctly by habit yet not be able to notate it. Practise writing, playing and naming the altered degrees.

A five-minute practice routine

Choose one minor key and use all three forms.

Write the natural minor from its key signature.

Circle the sixth and seventh degrees.

Convert it to harmonic minor and say the raised seventh aloud.

Convert it to melodic minor, marking the direction change.

Play or sing each form and listen for the harmonic minor’s wider 6–7 gap and the melodic minor’s smoother ascent.

Cover the page and write both altered forms again.

On the next day, use a different key. Regular changes of key test the method rather than one memorised pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between harmonic and melodic minor scales?

Harmonic minor raises the seventh degree ascending and descending. Classical melodic minor raises the sixth and seventh ascending, then uses the natural minor form descending.

Why does harmonic minor raise the seventh?

The raised seventh creates a leading note a semitone below the tonic. It strengthens the pull towards the tonic and supports a major dominant chord in a minor key.

Why is melodic minor different on the way down?

The traditional form raises 6 and 7 to smooth the ascending melody, then restores the natural-minor notes while descending. That directional form is the convention generally taught in classical theory.

Do I need to learn natural minor as well?

Yes. Even when a question asks for harmonic or melodic minor, natural minor provides the key signature and baseline from which the altered degrees are worked out.

Build the pattern, then test it in new keys

The reliable shortcut is not a rhyme; it is a method. Start with the natural minor, change the required scale degrees, preserve the letter names and check the direction.
