Use the circle as a map: sharps build clockwise, flats build anticlockwise, and relative minors share each major key’s signature.

The circle of fifths explained simply is a map of key signatures and the relationships between keys. Put C major at the top, where there are no sharps or flats. Move clockwise and each new major key gains one sharp; move anticlockwise and each gains one flat. Once you understand those two patterns, key signatures become something you can work out rather than a list you must guess.

For students, the circle supports faster scale and key-signature work. For parents and teachers, it provides a visual way to explain why keys are organised as they are.

What does “circle of fifths” mean?

Starting on C and moving up a perfect fifth takes you to G. Another perfect fifth takes you from G to D, then to A. Repeating that interval eventually cycles through all twelve pitch classes, so musicians arrange the keys in a circle.

By convention, C sits at 12 o’clock because its major scale uses only natural notes. The right side collects sharp keys; the left side collects flat keys. Moving anticlockwise can also be understood as moving up a perfect fourth or down a perfect fifth.

Clockwise: add sharps one at a time

Read clockwise from the top:

C → G → D → A → E → B → F♯

C has no sharps. G has one, D has two, and the pattern continues until F♯ major has six. Sharps are added in this fixed order:

F♯ → C♯ → G♯ → D♯ → A♯ → E♯ → B♯

The seventh sharp, B♯, appears if the sequence is extended to C♯ major. For a first pass, mastering the run from C to F♯ gives you the central clockwise pattern.

Anticlockwise: add flats one at a time

Now read anticlockwise:

C → F → B♭ → E♭ → A♭ → D♭ → G♭

Flats are added in this order:

B♭ → E♭ → A♭ → D♭ → G♭ → C♭ → F♭

F major has one flat, B♭ major has two, and G♭ major has six. If extended to C♭ major, the seventh flat is F♭. Notice that the order of flats is the reverse of the order of sharps when you ignore the accidental signs: B–E–A–D–G–C–F versus F–C–G–D–A–E–B.

Follow one direction at a time: F–C–G–D–A–E–B for sharps, and B–E–A–D–G–C–F for flats.

How to recognise and build key signatures

The circle gives you both the number and order of accidentals.

To build a sharp key signature: find the major key clockwise, note its number of sharps, then write that many from the F–C–G–D–A–E–B order. A major is three steps from C, so it has F♯, C♯ and G♯.

To name a sharp major key: find the last sharp and move up one semitone. If the last sharp is G♯, the key is A major.

To build a flat key signature: find the key anticlockwise, then take the required flats from B–E–A–D–G–C–F.

To name a flat major key: the second-last flat is usually the key name. B♭, E♭ and A♭ indicate E♭ major. F major, with only B♭, is the exception to remember.

These checks are useful when theory work asks you to identify a key, construct a scale or write the correct key signature. They also support graded theory study, including AMEB Music Theory preparation.

Where do relative minor keys fit?

Every major key has a relative minor with the same key signature. The relative minor begins on scale degree 6 of the major scale, which is a minor third below the major tonic.

Examples include:

C major and A minor: no sharps or flats

G major and E minor: one sharp

F major and D minor: one flat

Many circle diagrams place each relative minor inside its major key. To find the relative major from a minor key, reverse the process: move up a minor third. For example, E minor leads to G major, so E minor has one sharp.

Do not confuse relative minor with parallel minor. C major and C minor share a tonic, but they do not share a key signature.

What does the circle show about related keys?

Neighbouring keys differ by one accidental and share six of their seven scale notes. That makes them closely related in common-practice tonal music. Around C major, for example, G major is the dominant-side neighbour and F major is the subdominant-side neighbour.

This can help you understand many modulations, choose nearby keys for an arrangement, or compare chords drawn from related scales. It is a map, not a rulebook: the circle does not predict every chord progression, and music can move between distant keys or use harmony that is not diatonic.

A practical one-week routine

Short retrieval practice is more effective than repeatedly looking at a completed diagram.

Use five sessions of about 10 minutes:

Map C and the directions. Draw a blank circle, put C at the top, and label “sharps clockwise” and “flats anticlockwise”.

Build the sharp side. Write C–G–D–A–E–B–F♯, then add each signature in F–C–G–D–A–E–B order.

Build the flat side. Write C–F–B♭–E♭–A♭–D♭–G♭, then add flats in B–E–A–D–G–C–F order.

Add relative minors. Place A minor under C major, then continue with E minor under G major and D minor under F major.

Apply it. Take three key signatures from a worksheet or piece of music. Name each major key, its relative minor and its two neighbours. Finish by redrawing the circle from memory.

Common mistakes to avoid

Swapping the clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

Remembering the correct letters but writing the accidentals in reverse order.

Calling a relative minor a parallel minor.

Treating F♯ major and G♭ major as the same written key. They sound enharmonically equivalent on an equal-tempered piano, but their note spellings and key signatures differ.

Assuming the circle dictates all harmony rather than showing useful key relationships.

Frequently asked questions

Why is C major at the top?

C major has no sharps or flats, so it is the clearest starting point. Each step away from C adds one accidental in the chosen direction.

What is the simplest way to remember the order of sharps and flats?

Learn one letter sequence: F–C–G–D–A–E–B. The flat order is exactly the reverse: B–E–A–D–G–C–F. Say the sequence, write it, then use it to build real key signatures.

Are F♯ major and G♭ major the same key?

On a standard equal-tempered piano, they use enharmonically equivalent sounding pitches. In notation, however, F♯ major has six sharps and G♭ major has six flats. The spelling reflects each note’s role and the musical context.

Does the circle of fifths tell me which chords to use?

It helps you see closely related keys, so it can suggest sensible places to explore. It does not determine a progression or account for every chromatic, modal or stylistic choice.

Keep learning with guided practice

If you would like a structured next step, MusoLearn Music Theory Level 2 includes three Circle of Fifths lessons covering sharps clockwise, flats anticlockwise, key-signature construction and relative minor keys. The course is video-first, with 3–7 minute lessons, quizzes, worksheets, teacher chat and a 3-day trial.

You can also explore the AMEB Music Theory learning pathway or use the music theory level assessment to find a suitable starting point.

Use the circle as a working map

The circle becomes useful when you stop treating it as a poster and start using it to solve small musical problems. Anchor C at the top, build sharps clockwise and flats anticlockwise, then connect each major key with its relative minor. With regular retrieval and real examples, the pattern becomes a practical tool for reading, writing and understanding music.
