<p>The numbers align with the main beats; each “&amp;” falls halfway between them. Two quavers on beat 1 are therefore “1 &amp;”.</p>


<p>For semiquavers, many teachers use:</p>


<p><strong>1 e &amp; a 2 e &amp; a</strong></p>


<p>Other rhythm syllables are also valid. Stay consistent and count slowly enough to speak clearly.</p>


<h2>Step 4: Count rests instead of skipping them</h2>


<p>A rest is measured silence, not a pause in concentration. If beat 2 contains a crotchet rest, say “2” silently while maintaining the pulse. If the first half of a beat is a quaver rest and the second half has a note, the note still belongs on “&amp;”.</p>


<p>Remember: <strong>silence still takes time</strong>. Let the hands wait until the correct subdivision arrives.</p>


<h2>Step 5: Use a speak–clap–play sequence</h2>


<p>Separate the tasks instead of reading pitch and rhythm at once:</p>

<li><strong>Speak:</strong> Say the beat numbers and subdivisions without clapping.</li>

<p>For a new 4/4 passage, draw or imagine four beat columns in every bar. Then locate each attack.</p>


<p>Suppose a bar contains a crotchet, two quavers and a minim:</p>

<li>quavers on <strong>2 &amp;</strong>;</li>
<li>minim begins on <strong>3</strong> and continues through beat <strong>4</strong>.</li>

<p>Say “1, 2 &amp;, 3–4”. Do not clap again on beat 4; the minim is still sounding.</p>


<h2>How to count rhythm in 6/8 time</h2>


<p>6/8 is not felt as six equal main beats. It is <strong>compound duple time</strong>: six quavers are grouped into two main beats, with each dotted-crotchet beat dividing into three quavers.</p>

<p><strong>1 la li 2 la li</strong></p>


<p>Some teachers prefer “1 &amp; a 2 &amp; a”. Use the system your teacher expects, but keep the two large beats clear.</p>
