Grade 6 practical on the way? It needs a Grade 2 theory pass, so start here. These are the first three video lessons of Level 2, MusoLearn’s Grade 2 course, exactly as they appear in the course: about 14 minutes in all.
Each lesson opens in a new tab. Watched one? Come back and try three questions with your child.
Three Level 2 questions. How will your child do?
Your child taps an answer and it marks itself, just like the quizzes in the course. You don’t need to know the answers.
C up to G is a perfect fifth. How many semitones is that?
Count every key, black and white, after C: C sharp, D, D sharp, E, F, F sharp, G. Seven semitones make a perfect fifth, and each step round the circle of fifths is one of them.

Which major key has this key signature?
Two sharps, F sharp and C sharp. Going clockwise round the circle of fifths, C has none, G has one and D has two: D major.

This is G major’s key signature. Which minor key shares it?
Count down three semitones from G: F sharp, F, E. E minor is G major’s relative minor, so both have one sharp, F sharp.
3 out of 3. Well done!
Next comes Chapter 2: D and A major, and the minor scales.

Students’ own words from MusoLearn course surveys. The rating is each student’s own.
You don’t need to read music to help.
MusoLearn is built so your child can learn the theory without you having to explain it.
Your child learns from the video
Each lesson explains one idea in a few minutes. Your child can pause it, replay it or slow it down until it makes sense.
The quizzes mark themselves
The score shows as soon as a quiz is submitted, so you can see what your child got right without knowing the theory.
Questions go to a teacher, not to you
Your child types a question, or sends a photo of the written work, in the course chat. A MusoLearn teacher replies, usually within 24 hours.
Lessons are taught by MusoHunt teachers (opens in a new tab). MusoLearn is part of MusoHunt, a directory of vetted music teachers.

- Levels 1 to 5, written for students preparing for AMEB Theory of Music Grades 1 to 5, so Level 1 is there if the basics need a refresh. Level 6 is coming soon at no extra cost.
- Why a whole year? At two or three lessons a week, Level 2 takes roughly five to seven weeks. After Grade 6 comes Grade 7 practical, which needs a Grade 3 theory pass, and Level 3 is included for it (check AMEB’s current Manual). All year your child also has the piano scales and arpeggios courses and aural training.
- Compared with a private tutor. Private AMEB theory tutors usually advertise A$40 to A$70 an hour (listings checked October 2026), so A$349 covers about five to eight hours of one-to-one tutoring. Membership covers a whole year of Levels 1 to 5, with quizzes that mark themselves and a teacher to ask.
- Piano scales and arpeggios courses
- Aural training (intervals, rhythm and pitch) and the full Interval Trainer game
- Course chat with a MusoLearn teacher, for questions and photos of written work

Questions parents ask.
Your child
Does my child need Grade 1 theory first?
Level 2 builds on Level 1: reading both clefs, note values, C, G and F major, and simple time. A child who has those can start here. If any of them feel shaky, Level 1 is included in the membership. Not sure? The free placement quiz takes about three minutes.
Can my child do it without me sitting beside them?
Yes. Each lesson explains the idea before the exercise, the quizzes mark themselves, and questions go to a MusoLearn teacher in the course chat. After the first lesson or two, you can log in to your child’s account and check progress on the dashboard.
How long does Level 2 take?
Level 2 has 12 short video lessons. At two or three lessons a week, with the quizzes and worksheets, it takes roughly five to seven weeks. Your child can go at their own speed, and every lesson can be replayed.
Who teaches the lessons?
MusoHunt teachers (opens in a new tab). MusoLearn is part of MusoHunt, a directory of vetted music teachers. Questions in the course chat are answered by a MusoLearn teacher, usually within 24 hours.
Does it work on an iPad or phone?
Yes. MusoLearn works in any browser and in the MusoLearn app on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac.
The AMEB exam
Why does Grade 6 practical need Grade 2 theory?
AMEB sets theory requirements for the higher practical grades: Grade 6 practical needs a Grade 2 theory pass, Grade 7 needs Grade 3, Grade 8 needs Grade 4 and AMusA needs Grade 5. AMEB holds the practical certificate until the theory pass is recorded. Check AMEB’s current Manual for your exam year.
How does the AMEB Grade 2 theory exam work?
AMEB runs its Theory of Music exams itself, online, with no fixed exam date. After enrolling, a student has 12 months to do the exam and can take practice exams in AMEB’s portal first (check AMEB’s current terms). MusoLearn teaches the theory. It does not enrol students in the exam, set it, run it or mark it, and cannot predict a result.
Is MusoLearn part of AMEB?
No. MusoLearn is an independent course provider. MusoLearn Music Theory Levels 1 to 5 are written for students preparing for AMEB Theory of Music Grades 1 to 5, and AMEB is mentioned only to describe that exam. Always check the current AMEB syllabus for your exam year.
